Agri-Tech

Growth opportunities in Norfolk

Agri-tech is vital for food security and human health; it is also one of the world’s fastest growing markets.

The world faces a huge challenge: to produce enough nutritious food to feed a rapidly growing global population. New technologies have the potential to increase agricultural production and processing yields –efficiently, profitably and sustainably. This presents great opportunities for science and business.

Here in Norfolk we have one of Europe’s major centres for agricultural research and development. It combines expertise in food, plant and health research with innovative farming methods. We have scientists and companies working on new technologies from gene editing and disease control and prevention, to precision irrigation and fertilisation, as well as greater use of automation and vertical farming.

We offer innovative agri-tech businesses an extraordinary environment in which to grow.

of England’s produce

Norfolk has the largest agricultural sector of any English county. It generates over 5% of England’s agricultural produce and 3% of English food processing output. The local sector is increasingly hi-tech and automated, with an average GVA per employee of over £50,000.

Investment in research and development in the local agri-tech sector has exceeded other UK regions in recent years. Consequently, we have seen growth in science and R&D employment accelerate by 50% since 2007 – compared with 19% nationally. This is in part thanks to the growth in the Norwich Research Park (NRP) and its wider academic cluster, as well as the work of Agri-Tech East in facilitating knowledge transfer from ‘lab to field’ across the region.

NRP, set in 230 hectares of parkland, is one of Europe’s largest life and environmental sciences cluster. It is home to six internationally important research institutes, more than 80 businesses and over 3,000 scientists, researchers and clinicians. Its partners deliver world-respected research in the commercially and socially important areas of soil health, crop science, plant genetics, food production, climate science, human diet and health, and food chain resilience and sustainability.
